Keyword research is the cornerstone of optimizing your website to perform well in the search engines. There are several tools that can be used to research keywords. Here are two free keyword research tools:

Use these tools to help you broaden your viewpoint on what phrases someone might enter into a search engine when looking to find your products or services.

This is not a one-time-only step in optimizing your site. Optimization is a cyclical process.

An even more comprehensive tool for keyword research is to run a few Google Adwords campaigns.

Why? When you run an ad campaign, you get detailed feedback on how many times your ad appears for a certain search word or phrase (number of impressions). You also get feedback on how many times someone who saw your ad "clicked-through" to your site. You only pay for click-throughs and not impressions.

You also get access to a keyword tool by Google that not only gives you keyword suggestions, but also gives you information on the popularity of certain phrases and the level of competition for that phrase. This is data that other services charge hundreds of dollars per year for.

Using this data, you can then target and optimize your website to perform better in the "organic" search engine results - that is, the ones that come up as natural, not sponsored (pay-per-click) results.
