Summary: 3 steps to More Effective Email Communication
1) What is your objective in sending the mail?
Are you requesting action, looking for a response
or merely keeping people informed? Be sure to
stay focussed on your objective and clearly communicate
all information. The more complete your communication,
the less likely that people will write requesting
more information.
2) With your objective in mind, create a descriptive
subject line for your message. Think of the subject
line as the title of your message. It should
convey whether you are requesting action, expecting
a response or passing along information. The
subject header should be a summary of what your
message is about.
3) Be consise. There are so many demands on
our attention, it is important to be brief. Use
the journalist's trick of putting the most important
information at the beginning and get into greater
detail later in the message. This allows your
readers to quickly look at a message and decide
if it is something they need to act on now or
if they can save the mail for later reference.
Questions? Comments? I would love to hear from
you.
