Permission
Marketing by Seth Godin is a book that has
completely changed my viewpoint on websites.
Godin states "Every commercial website should
be set up to accomplish one goal. Your website
should be 100% focused on signing up strangers
to give you permission to market to them."
That's a pretty bold statement, but I have come
to believe in the wisdom of it. We are in the
midst of an attention crisis here in the US. Traditional
marketing methods focus on interruption - grabbing
as much of our attention as possible. However,
the less free attention we have, the harder traditional
marketers have to work to get us to pay attention.
Permission marketing, on the other hand, is exactly
what it sounds like, you get permission from potential
clients to educate them about your products and
services. Permission marketing differs from traditional
marketing in that it is:
* Anticipated
* Personal
* Relevant
By obtaining permission, your prospects anticipate
hearing from you. Your messages to them are personal.
Your messages to them are relevant, based on their
needs and interests. Email is the ideal method
to get started with permission marketing because
it is non-invasive and very inexpensive to distribute.
